Home Safety and Security
The kitchen is simply the room inside your home where many sharp objects are located. This means that it is not a place where you would want to find children playing or running around. Appliances can also be a potential hazard since these have plugs and kids can play with these. There are many other things in your kitchen that may be detrimental to your children’s health. So it is but right for you to childproof your kitchen so even if your kids hang around while you do your chores, you won’t have to worry about them getting into an accident.
Keep cleaning products, soaps, detergents, pesticides and other chemicals in cabinets that children will not be able to reach. Do not transfer chemicals and hazardous liquids in food containers or common containers so they won’t be mistaken for food. Switch to products with child resistant caps like those of vitamin bottles where you have to push and twist before opening.
Knives, blades and other sharp objects should be placed in high cabinets or latched drawers. You should do the same for china and glassware. Choking hazards like raisins, small fruits and coins should be removed from low surfaces. Do not leave hot food, beverages, glassware and food lying around where children can reach them. These could fall to the floor, break or spill on your child.
Keep your kitchen space simple and avoid using table cloth and placemats since these can be easily pulled by children. Just make sure that counter tops and tables are clean at all times to avoid the spread of germs. Keep the dishwasher closed whenever not in use and if possible, unplug it. Do the same with your other appliances.
These are only some of the steps you can do to childproof your kitchen. Take time to evaluate what other things you can change or remove to make sure your children stay safe in your own home.
